10. The battle for number 1 - Serena vs Safina. Most of the battle for number one actually did not happen on court. Rather, the exchange of words, sarcasm and snorts, was the highlight. For a time, Dinara Safina seemed to be irreplaceable in the WTA number 1 ranking, even without a Grand Slam. Apparently, the tour has rewarded her consistency, but did not demerit her enough for her meltdowns and embarassing losses. Serena, on the other hand, only showed up (and really showed up) on the big events. The technical number 1 Slamless Wonder versus the self-proclaimed number 1 Multi-Slam winner...this battle is probably already finished, especially that the Belgians are now back thrown in the mix.

9. Veterans bid goodbye - In recent years, we have not seen so much big names finally hanging their rackets. 2009 saw the veterans Ai Sugiyama, Marat Safin, Natalie Dechy, Amelie Mauresmo and Fabrice Santoro among other prominent names bid goodbye to the game. Can you predict who's next in 2010? Tommy Haas? Lleyton Hewitt? Venus Williams?

8. Wimbledon Roof - It was announced a couple of years ago. And this year, it finally happened -- the inauguration of the very essential retractable roof in the Wimbledon center court. No rain can now spoil the action happening during a Wimbledon match. Then world number 1 Dinara Safina was the first to play under the closed roof.

7. Welcome Juan Martin to the Winners' Circle - Andy Murray who? Juan Martin del Potro was never the number one pick as the young gun to make a mark in the tour. But when he won the 2009 US Open, against the Roger Federer at that, everybody starts to notice what could possibly be the deadliest weapon in the game right now.....that booming forehand!

6. Comeback Kid Kim Clijsters - That's too much 'K' or 'C' your mouth can handle. And likewise, she was too much for the current WTA wannabees. In only her first Grand Slam tournament after retiring and giving birth, the tennis good girl went on to win the US Open crown. What's even more remarkable is that her victory in Flushing Meadows actually spurred her fellow Belgian Justine Henin to make her own comeback. In an interesting turn of events, it does seem that Justine is out to get Kim again. Now that's a treat to the tennis fans who are ever frustrated with the current WTA line up.

5. Andre Agassi OPENs up - Andre Agassi, though out of the limelight for years now, has outshined and outsold the still active Serena Williams in the autobiography department. Well the controversies contained by the book were more than enough marketing strategy to keep tennis fans interested, and maybe disgusted with the 8-time Grand Slam champion and the tennis governing bodies. The crystal meth and the cover up of drug use (as well as of the baldness) have fueled up a long-term debacle.

4. Serena Slams a Lineswoman - Sex and drugs have caught up with the young stars (surprise, surprise!) Ernests Gulbis and Richard Gasquet, who have both failed so far to live up to expectations and predictions. But no scandal beats that of Serena Williams during the US Open semifinals, when she allegedlly cursed and threatened a lineswoman after calling her foot fault during a crucial point. A rarely implemented point penalty was witnessed consequently, and a probation goes on, the worst punishment of which could be a Grand Slam ban.

3. Rafa of Australia - The 2009 Australian Open was the perfect sequel to the epic 2008 Wimbledon. Once again, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have solidified their place as this generation's premier rivalry. And with Nadal beating Federer for the 2nd consecutive time in a Grand Slam final, people have tipped him to finally own the circuit and start a new era after the Swiss dominance for years. Special mention goes to the semifinal match against fellow Spaniard and newsmaker (in the romance department) Fernando Verdasco -- an equally action-packed match as the finals.

2. Wimbledon Marathon Final - Perhaps there's no venue to set-up the match of the year than the All England Club. 2008's biggest match was in the exact same stage -- Wimbledon final. This year, it was still Roger Federer, but against the rekindled spirit of Andy Roddick. The American was technically never gone during the past couple of years, but his amazing performance here could practically be considered a comeback. Their match got the nod for the longest Wimbledon final in the Open era at 4 hours and 16 minutes.

1. Roger Makes History - Roger Federer...Rog, as he prefers.....it's all about him this year! The consistent defeat against nemesis Rafael Nadal during the latter part of 2008 and early part of 2009 was the perfect build-up to a heartwarming victory in the end. After dramatic turn of events, headed by the upset of King of Clay Nadal by Robin Soderling, he finally completed a 'Grand Slam' by winning the Roland Garros title. Then he goes on to win his 15th Slam in another dramatic Wimbledon final, overtaking Pete Sampras' record to be the "Greatest of All Time." This year he cried tears of sadness and tears of joy; definitely a rollercoaster ride. He has undeniably become a historic, and possibly admirable, character, hopefully avoiding to taint his reputation with scandals to match that of bestfriend Tiger Woods.

This week...Novak Djokovic continues to pull some big victories during the last remaining weeks of this season by winning the BNP Paribas Masters. He then inches closer to reclaiming the upper spot from Andy Murray, to rejoin his co-Grand Slam Winners Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the top 3.

For a time this year, it seemed unthinkable, but slamless Dinara Safina has finally taken a fall from her ranking lead, and eventually usurped by long self-proclaimed number one Serena Williams. It's possible we've finally heard the last of the debate regarding WTA rankings. Meanwhile, Svetlana Kuznetsova remains to be the reluctant top ten player as she resumes her series of in-and-out in the list. She is currently neck-and-neck with Americans Andy Roddick and Venus Williams in the last 3 spots.

In the tennis world, this time could probably be called the "off season", especially that all the majors already concluded. And what could give fans a healthy dose of tennis during this lazy tail-end of 2009? Tennis video games! All the action...all the excitement...all the lying around on fat a****, pigging out on potato chips and soda....ahhhhhhh.....the life of a true sports fan.

Arguably the most popular tennis video game has just released its latest version this year -- Virtua Tennis 2009. Developed by Sumo Digital and Sega, VT 2009 comes off the heels of the successful predecessor, Virtua Tennis 3. The most notable addition since VT3 is the inclusion of legends Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, and Tim Henman, who could actually act as you coaches!

The player list? For the men, there are the usual suspects: the Roger Federers, the Rafael Nadals...the debut of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. And then there's also the injury-plagued David Nalbandian, the ill-stricken Mario Ancic, the aging Tommy Haas, the inflexible James Blake...players you wouldn't bet on in the real thing. Perhaps, these names were significant in 2008, when the development of the game was figuratively already on its "round of 16". But looking at the happenings during recent months, relevant newer names are unfortunately excluded.

This week...the US Open has produced a new star in Juan Martin del Potro, who surprised many by winning a major this soon. Hence, he joins the party of the top players and climbs up to number 5. This does not bode well for Britain's Andy Murray who continues to miss the golden opportunity of a maiden Grand Slam at a young age. Amidst the hype that he has carried on for the past couple of years, he is now seemingly being left behind by contemporaries Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and del Potro in the Grand Slam department.

Dinara Safina's ranking continues to be a joke in the books of critics, as she holds on as top woman in WTA. Eclipsed by the universally celebrated fairy tale comeback and Grand Slam victory by Kim Clijsters, one wonders if the top ranking is a curse to Marat's little sister. But beyond the surprise Championships in Men's and Women's singles, the talk of the town remains to be Serena Williams behavior and disagreeable non-apology as a sore loser. It will definitely go down in history as one of tennis' ugliest moments. She drops one spot to number 7.

The biggest story yet of the 2009 US Open is the 2nd round upset of number 4 seed Elena Dementieva by the American teenager Melanie Oudin. Off the heels of her summer hardcourt victory, many tipped Elena as the favorite to win the last Grand Slam of the year, especially with her much improved serve. However, the feisty 17-year-old Oudin is turning into the seed slayer (following her win over Jelena Jankovic in Wimbledon), and took Elena out of contention.

Elena Dementieva, then, still remains to be "the best player without a Grand Slam." At 26, she is one of the veterans of the tour, and is surrounded by hungry youngsters. Whether age is a factor, one has to take a look at Serena and Venus Williams at their late 20s, yet current Slam winners. Or maybe Amelie Mauresmo, who took home 2 Slam crowns in 2006 at the age of 28. And it's not like Elena is playing crap; rather, she's just not as lucky in the draws as the other braided blonde Russian (cough***Sharapova***cough).

This week...there are no changes to the top 6, but the way things are going, there soon might be big ones (especially with the US Open looming around). While Rafael Nadal continues to lead the pack of young guns, Andy Murray is slowly catching up with him, intending to steal away the number 2 spot. With solid performance on the US Open Series, the 22-year old Scot will try to catch his long-awaited maiden Grand Slam trophy in Flushing Meadows. And the same could be said with his best bud Novak Djokovic.

Svetlana Kuznetsova drops out once again of the top ten after a short-lived stay. Meanwhile, fellow Russian Dinara Safina keeps the women's crown, albeit should be shared with her "can't-live-without" coach. Top Cincinnati girl Jelena Jankovic rises and returns to the bottom edge of the top ten, as Venus Williams and Juan Martin del Potro slip one notch each to number 8 and 9 respectively.

This week...after Roland Garros, it was Wimbledon's turn to shake up the rankings. Despite a solid performance upto the semifinals, Elena Dementieva bids goodbye to the top ten, and yet again to a chance for a maiden Grand Slam trophy. On the other hand, no amount of ridicule and mockery to the Slamless wonder can stop Dinara Safina from consistently ascending in the rankings, now at the expense of Novak Djokovic. The champion Serena Williams can only snort so much to suck "the most consistent player" down from the rankings.

Andy Roddick makes some passing shots and debuts at number 9, deservingly after a marathon finals, and a painful loss, in the Championships. But the biggest story of the week is obviously ROGER FEDERER winning his 15th Grand Slam title. Not only did he regain the top spot from Wimbledon absentee Rafael Nadal (and by a large margin, by the way), but more importantly, he has arguably put an end to the question of whether he is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) in terms of quality (a Career Grand Slam by winning all 4) and quantity (exceeds Pete Sampras' 14 Slams). Everyone will just have to wait for him to achieve one more major feat (A True Grand Slam ala Rod Laver).

This week...Some surprising results in Roland Garros 2009 has truly shaken up the rankings. With a win in Paris, that pitches him as the "Greatest Tennis Player of All Time," Roger Federer amassed major points ahead of the other ranked players not by the name of Rafael Nadal. He still has a lot of work cut out to regain his throne from the King of Clay, but The French Open championship, that served as the icing on his Career Grand Slam cake, has hugely diminished their gap. It doesn't spell good news, though, that semifinalist Juan Martin del Potro has now entered the scene, debuting at number 8.

Meanwhile, the Serbians had some bad days, with 2 popular girls dropping out of the top ten, and remaining flagbearer Novak Djokovic finally losing his spot to Andy Murray. A helpless Dinara Safina can only stay put at number 5, while Serena Williams needs more proof she's the best of all, as she stays beneath the Slamless wonder. On the other hand, it took a long-awaited 2nd Grand Slam win, and triumph over self demons, for Svetlana Kuznetsova to reenter the top ten.

This week...the Men held strong to the top 4 spots, with world number 1 Rafael Nadal sitting comfortably as the king of this claycourt season, with fresh new Master Series Championship titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. His red dirt adversary for the 2 events, Novak Djokovic, also stays strong at number 3, but needs more titles to overtake Roger Federer, despite the recent infamous wins against the Swiss maestro.

The Women, on the other hand, have made a little switcheroo in the rankings. Dinara Safina, though slamless, proves that she is this season's top girl, and gains the number 5 spot. This brings the Williams sisters, the self-proclaimed best players, a notch down each.

April 17, 2009 - TENNIS TOP TEN

This week...the Men proved even more that Tennis is a male-dominated sport in this era, as they occupied the top 4 spots. This means that Andy Murray reaches his career high ranking of number 4 in this Top Ten by winning the "5th Grand Slam" in the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. He and his best bud Novak Djokovic also gets the distinction of most tournaments played in the season. In contrast, lack of matches has caused Nikolay Davydenko to tumble out of the rankings after consistently hanging tight at number 10.

As for the girls...the "Number 1 Slamless Wonders" Dinara Safina and Jelena Jankovic are slowly losing their grip in their positions. And with massive points to defend this claycourt season, their rankings are soon in serious threat.

Meanwhile, a new coach means a new hope for Ana Ivanovic, as she makes a comeback at number 10. It would be a tall order for the Serbian, however, to keep this pace as Juan Martin del Potro lurks just right outside the Top Ten and will surely race her to the finish in the coming weeks.

This week...there were no dramatic changes in the rankings, despite all the action in Indian Wells' BNP Paribas Open. Winning the title further cemented Rafael Nadal's number 1 position, with seminfinalist Roger Federer trailing at number 2. While everyone is talking about the existence of a "Big 4" in men's tennis, Nadal and Federer's rankings points indicate that there are otherwise only 2 who are in a league of their own, with at least almost 200 points lead over the other guys.

Serena Williams continues to front the women in the rankings. Interesting enough, none of the 5 women in the top ten made a good showing in Indian Wells -- Serena and Venus Williams continued to snub the event, Dinara Safina lost in the quarters, Jelena Jankovic in the 2nd round, and Elena Dementieva in the 1st round.

Just around the corner is the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, supposedly the "fifth Grand Slam." With a stronger field of participating players, it is poised to shake up the Tennis Top Ten next week.

This week...the new season is becoming one of the hottest yet with the thrilling conclusion of the Australian Open! Injury and poor performance cause the resident eye candies Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic to finally drop out of the top ten. With a whopping record of approximately 1,400 points added in the rankings, things have truly been shaken up for 2009. AO runner-up Dinara Safina is the biggest gainer with a giant leap from outside of the top ten to number 6. Stealthily, Nikolay Davydenko also makes a surprise debut at number 10, giving the Men a 5-to-5 proportion with the Women in the rankings.

AO champion Rafael Nadal fully solidified his hold at the peak with a massive 200-point lead from the secondary sensitive Swiss, Roger Federer. Meanwhile, AO champion Serena Williams toppled Novak Djokovic from the third spot.

Could this year be the year Ana Ivanovic wins her favorite Grand Slam? Remember, she won Roland Garros a year after she easily lost the finals to someone (Henin) who then did not make an appearance in the tournament that year. Next week, it will be exactly one year after she easily lost the AO finals to Sharapova who will not make an appearance this year. That's probably too superstitious, but definitely befitting someone who skips on the tennis lines.

The Year that was -- Clockwise: Roger Federer relinquishes his 4-year long Wimbledon crown to Rafael Nadal, along with the World number 1 ranking; Andy Murray announces his arrival as a top contender by winning the Madrid Masters Series and reaching US Open finals; Like him or hate him, Novak Djokovic's antics oncourt has won him Australian Open and Tennis Masters Cup; Williams sisters dominated women's Wimbledon and US Open; Rafael Nadal's monumental celebration after winning the best Tennis Match in history; Jelena Jankovic works her way to the number 1 WTA ranking with consecutive tour appearances and a retirement from then top woman Justine Henin; Maria Sharapova beat Ana Ivanovic in the most glamorous Australian Open final ever (Ivanovic later on wins French Open). Special mention goes to Elena Dementieva who won an Olympic Gold Medal.

2008...the year has been one of the most thrilling and exciting in tennis history, what with the dramatic changes in the top rankings. In Men's, Roger Federer loses the number 1 spot to Rafael Nadal for the first time since 2004. Besides Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray has also been thrown in the mix as top contenders especially going in 2009. In Women's, Justine Henin made a premature retirement. After that, everybody else had a chance -- Ana Ivanovic and Serena Williams, before Jelena Jankovic seals the deal to grab the top spot by the end of the year.
