2 0 0 8 Final Rankings

The Year that was -- Clockwise: Roger Federer relinquishes his 4-year long Wimbledon crown to Rafael Nadal, along with the World number 1 ranking; Andy Murray announces his arrival as a top contender by winning the Madrid Masters Series and reaching US Open finals; Like him or hate him, Novak Djokovic's antics oncourt has won him Australian Open and Tennis Masters Cup; Williams sisters dominated women's Wimbledon and US Open; Rafael Nadal's monumental celebration after winning the best Tennis Match in history; Jelena Jankovic works her way to the number 1 WTA ranking with consecutive tour appearances and a retirement from then top woman Justine Henin; Maria Sharapova beat Ana Ivanovic in the most glamorous Australian Open final ever (Ivanovic later on wins French Open). Special mention goes to Elena Dementieva who won an Olympic Gold Medal.

2008...the year has been one of the most thrilling and exciting in tennis history, what with the dramatic changes in the top rankings. In Men's, Roger Federer loses the number 1 spot to Rafael Nadal for the first time since 2004. After that, everybody else had a chance -- Ana Ivanovic and Serena Williams, before Jelena Jankovic seals the deal to grab the top spot by the end of the year.

Rafael Nadal-the Olympian...I still cannot get over how good that sounds.

2009 is going to be interesting what with players like Murray and Djokovic in the circuit. Cannot wait! You?

feels a bit strange that Ana Ivanovic is at number 10 - i really thought thay she would kick on to be in the top 2 or 3 of the womens game.

I haven't really read anyone who has pinpointed why she dropped off in the second half of the season. Thoughts?

Still, that is a fantastic list of Women above her.

I wonder how it will all look at the end of 2009. I would impagine Sharapova will be back up in the top few, injuries permitting. Maybe Andy Murray to overtake Djok??

Lilac Kitten, I can see you're a Nadal fan. Yup, can't wait for the new season. I think men's tennis was on the verge of being kinda boring, until Nadal, Djokovic and Murray arrived. I'm a big Federer fan, but it's no fun without these 3 challengers.

Hi Betfair. I think it was lack of matches during the latter part of the year that proved detrimental to Ivanovic's ranking. If you remember, she withdrew from the Olympics because of thumb injury, and then skipped a lot of tournaments after that. She was not in best form when she returned.

Yup, Murray seems to be the biggest breakthrough, and in my opinion, there is now such a 4-way rivalry among Nadal, Fed, Djok, and Murray.

Read your article, if I just would say: very good, it is somewhat insufficient, but I am

still tempted to say: really good!
